Daily Meditation To Attain Peace of Mind

The act of meditation for at least 15 minutes in the early morning will have a positive effect on your mind during the entire day.

Upon waking have these positive thoughts

I am a peaceful soul, my aim today is to have a peaceful mind and radiate peace to every person that I come into contact with.

Try to experience the stillness of mind of being a peaceful soul.
as other thoughts emerge in the mind do not judge or focus on them but repeat …………

I am a peaceful soul ………….I am a peaceful soul …………

My mind is filled with peace ………….. I radiate peace to the world ……………

I feel the gentle waves of peace flowing across my mind ……….

As these peaceful thoughts emerge in my mind I feel the stillness and silence envelopes my mind ……………..

Yogic Eating

Any dog or horse trainer will tell you that what is fed to an animal influences its behaviour. Although we like to forget this when it comes to ourselves, what we eat has a huge influence not only over our physical well being, but also over our thoughts, and ultimately our emotional and spiritual well being. The yogis of ancient times knew this, and many classical yogic texts, such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, contain advice on a yogic diet. However, proper diet is a controversial subject. Nutrition has been extensively researched by modern science, and there seems to be as many ‘proper’ diets as there are scientific studies. It is more than a bit confusing for someone to devise their own individual diet amidst so much, often contradictory, advice.

The advice given below is based on the classical yogic texts and on the author’s experience. It also gives pointers for further research and experimentation.

Unlike modern scientists, yogis are not interested in the chemical content (protein, vitamins, etc…) of the food. Instead, food is traditionally classified according to its effect on the body and mind, using the the three Gunas: Sattva (the quality of love, light and life), Raja (the quality of activity and passion, lacking stability) and Tamas (the quality of darkness and inertia, dragging us into ignorance and attachment) :

Sattvic food promotes clarity and calmness of mind and is favourable for spiritual growth. It is “sweet, fresh and agreeable” and includes most fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables, whole grains, honey, pure water and milk (with the reservation that commercially produced milk may not nowadays be so sattvic…). Given the amount of pesticides and chemical fertilisers used on commercial crops, only organic products still qualify as Sattvic, and tinned or frozen [...]

Rest your mind for 10 minutes a day

Resting the mind, more commonly known as meditating, is estimated to be practiced by about 2 percent of the world’s population. Interesting because we rest our bodies about eight hours a night, but 98 percent of us do not consciously rest our minds. During sleep, our minds are still quite active, even when we don’t’ recall our dreams, which is why sleeping doesn’t count as a rest for your mind. Meditation is described by Jon Kabat-Zinn in Wherever You Go, There You Are, as mindfulness. Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness is “paying attention, on purpose, in the present, and letting go of judgment”. One way to rest your mind is by just focusing on your breath and letting go of any thoughts that enter your mind. It is important not to force the thoughts away. Rather, you just recognize that you are having them, let them go by focusing your attention back to your breath.

You can try meditating for just a few minutes at first. If you are like most of us, you will find that your mind races with countless thoughts, concerns, and fears. The Zen Buddhists refer to this as “monkey mind” because it reflects the image of monkeys wandering quickly and aimlessly from one tree branch to another. Anyone can master the art of meditating…..just like most activities that bring us healthful benefits, you need to include the activity in your daily life (even if it’s just 5 to 10 minutes a day). After you have meditated daily for at least 3 weeks, notice any differences in how you feel, think, and even how you treat others…..you may be pleasantly surprised!

What is Meditation?

What is meditation and what does it do? Meditation is a mental/spiritual technique for relaxing the restlessness of the mind and freeing it from anxiety and stress. In its higher forms, it aims for the attaining of peace of mind, inner silence and spiritual awakening.

Meditation is a state of concentrated attention on a thought, idea, an aspect of God or on one’s awareness, and usually involves turning the attention inwards, away from the external world. During meditation, the mind often wanders away and the meditator has to be constantly vigilant, and to bring the attention back to the meditation again and again. This of course involves some effort in the beginning, but as one gains proficiency, less effort will be necessary. When one is advanced on the path, keeping the mind calm and free from distracting thoughts can become a habit.

In it higher forms, meditation aims to free the mind from the subconscious compulsive habit to think incessantly. This leads to inner peace, inner freedom, and to awareness of one’s real essence – The Inner I – The Spirit, which is above and beyond the mind. It also leads to serenity, clarity and bliss.

Meditation is practiced in both the East and the West in its various forms. You don’t need to be a monk or a hermit or live in seclusion or in an ashram in order to practice it. In fact, you can continue living your day-to-day life, have a job, a husband or a wife and kids, and still practice it. You don’t need to follow any particular religion, wear special clothes or lead a certain lifestyle. Meditation is an inner activity, which can be practiced anywhere, and has nothing to do with any external way of life.
