His Holiness facebook link: Here is a story about the Lord Buddha and one of his disciples about having a calm mind: Once Lord Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Lord Buddha told one of his disciples, ‘I am thirsty, do get me some water from that lake there’. The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water, and right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, ‘how can I give this muddy water to Lord Buddha to drink?’ So he came back and told Lord Buddha that the water was very muddy and is not fit to be drunk. After about half an hour, Lord Buddha asked the same disciple again to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. Yes, such wisdom we find here that is of course as true for us today as it was centuries ago! This simple advice as given by the Buddha, nothing fancy really, to let things settle is often just the right approach. The simple and right approach to bring us back to an inner balance and harmony, no matter who we are or what the situation may be. Also makes us think about the “middle way” which is also a strong element and theme that the Buddha taught about ongoing. The middle way means to not take anything at all too personally, but to try to keep a calm center and peaceful perspective within ourselves ongoing. Reason is that [...] |
