Vedic rishis, sages and scholars have sung the glory of the Gayatri Mantra, which begins thus: Aum bhur bhuvah svah tat savitur varenyam / Bhargo devasya dhimahi / dhiyo yo nah prachodayat .
Prayer is common to all religions. love for God is universal, the mode or method of prayer could be different since everyone is free to pray to the divine power in their own way. Prayer should be acceptable to all, simple and easy to adopt in daily life. Generally, people follow the path of prayer practised in the family. The Gayatri Mantra and any other prayer should be recited with sincerity and for the love of God. Only then its true benefit can be derived.
The Gayatri Mantra is a universal prayer; chanting it leads to wisdom and illuminated deeds. This mantra can be recited at all times, during the day or before or after finishing work. Our greatest heritage, this mantra is also known as the Guru Mantra, Savitri Mantra and Maha Mantra.
Mahatma Anand Swami Saraswati in Anand Gayatri Katha has explained the meaning and importance of this mantra in great detail: “If we want to recite the Gayatri, we shall have to dispossess our mind of hatred, and throw out all feelings of jealousy and enmity; only then we can achieve the state of being happy. Miseries do come in life and if we lose our patience and our mental balance, we shall retain base thoughts. It is thoughts which disturb us. It is the heart that brings us sorrow and it is the same heart that brings gladness. So life can be hell or heaven, the result of thoughts. This world is what we think it to be”.

Prayer and mantras are secrets to find peace of mind. For some people chanting the name of god is a way to find peace. Chanting mantras, like the Gayatri Mantra can help you find peace. Prayers have tremendous power to let you acquire peace. Thus writer John Wooden has quoted, “There are many things that are essential to arriving at truepeace of mind, and one of the most important is faith, which cannot be acquired without prayer.”
Find time for yourself. When you will find time for yourself only then will you find peace within. Aromatic oils, scented candles, and melodic music will surely come for your aid, but being happy from within is the answer to your pursuit offinding peace. Exercise regularly, eat healthy food and keep smiling.
Peace of mind gets affected when our mind gets occupied with filthy emotions like anger, jealousy, sadness or envy. You will never find peace of mind until you listen to your heart, so be yourself and you will be experiencing peace soon.
You tell me nothing new: you are not the only one that is troubled with wandering thoughts. Our mind is extremely roving; but as the will is mistress of all our faculties, she must recall them, and carry them to GOD, as their last end.
When the mind, for want of being sufficiently reduced by recollection, at our first engaging in devotion, has contracted certain bad habits of wandering and dissipation, they are difficult to overcome, and commonly draw us, even against our wills, to the things of the earth.
I believe one remedy for this is, to confess our faults, and to humble ourselves before GOD. I do not advise you to use multiplicity of words in prayer; many words and long discourses being often the occasions of wandering: hold yourself in prayer before GOD, like a dumb or paralytic beggar at a rich man’s gate: let it be your business to keep your mind in the presence of the LORD. If it sometimes wander, and withdraw itself from Him, do not much disquiet yourself for that; trouble and disquiet serve rather to distract the mind, than to re-collect it; the will must bring it back in tranquility; if you persevere in this manner, GOD will have pity on you.
One way to re-collect the mind easily in the time of prayer, and preserve it more in tranquility, is not to let it wander too far at other times: you should keep it strictly in the presence of GOD; and being accustomed to think of Him often, you will find it easy to keep your mind calm in the time of prayer, or at least to recall it from its wanderings.
